Having the right type of muscle quiz for your studies is the first step to any successful revision plan. The muscular system tends to be the area that most anatomy and physiology students struggle with. What You Need to Know
There are 3 types of muscle tissue in the body;
Skeletal – Voluntary muscle
Smooth – Involuntary muscle
Cardiac – Heart muscle
There is no definitive answer as to how many muscles there are in the body but figures vary from about 640 – 850. The majority agree with the lesser figure of 640. Thankfully, the majority of anatomy and physiology courses do not require you to know every single muscle in the body, only the main ones.
When you are learning muscles you will need to know the following;
- The muscle name.
- The position in the body.
- The origin – the part of the muscle that is attached to the immovable bone.
- The insertion – opposite to the origin, this is attached to the movable bone.
- The action – what action the muscle performs for example, flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, lateral and medial rotation.
This is a lot of information to learn, even just for 1 muscle. Imagine if you have to learn 100! That is why the need to test yourself throughout your course term is crucial. This is where a good muscle quiz guide comes in handy. You can use the muscle quiz guide in many ways, for example, complete a crossword puzzle, give yourself a test using the multiple choice questions, take a true or false quiz etc. Quizzes are designed to be interactive and they are a fun way to learn. They keep the student engaged with their coursework and encourage more study.
A Simple Revision Plan Using a Muscle Quiz Guide
I have designed a simple plan for you, one that can be used over and over again on any area of your anatomy and physiology studies. The plan is divided into a step by step approach so you can keep track of your progress and tick off the areas that you have completed.
1. Before you begin any study, type up a revision plan with the subject area to be covered, the start date and the finish date. Print off your revision plan and hang it on the wall in front of your desk so you are always aware of what needs to be done.
2. On the first day of your plan (for the purpose of this article, lets use the trapezius, latissiumus dorsi and erector spinae as examples of the muscles that you need to learn), from your muscle quiz guide, take 20 multiple choice questions on these muscles. Write the questions out on either a piece of paper or an index card. Index cards are more appropriate as they are smaller and can be carried around in your bag.
3. Spend the next 2 days learning the questions. Study them during your spare time, for example, on your lunch break, on the train or bus or if you are stuck in traffic.
4. Each evening when you get home, complete 1 crossword puzzle and 1 true or false quiz, relevant to the muscles you are learning.
5. At the end of the 2 days, give yourself a test using the multiple choice questions. Type the questions out on a piece of paper and take the test as if it were a proper exam. Do not look at your books. Correct the exam and keep it in your folder of notes.
6. If you answered any questions incorrectly, spend the first half of the next day going over them again, repeat the test that evening and continue this until you get 100%.
7. Repeat this process for 1 month, covering 3 muscles every 2 days (exclude weekends). Always test yourself using the multiple choice questions and complete as many quizzes and puzzles as you can.
After one month of using the muscle quiz guide, this means that you will be confident answering questions on 30 muscles! That is an amazing achievement. You can obviously tweak this plan if you so wish by adding more muscles every 2 days, if you have more time to study.
How to Enhance Your Revision
Another great way to further enhance your revision is to write each muscle out separately on an A4 sheet of paper. Copy and paste a picture of a muscle, for example, the teres major, onto the sheet of paper. Then write out it’s action, insertion, origin and position in the body. Increase the size of the font and make it ‘bold’ so it really stands out. I have known students to place these pieces of paper on their walls, in the bathroom or on the fridge door! Put them in a place where you will constantly see them. In front of your bed is a good example, this way you can learn the muscles before you sleep and as soon as you wake up.

I cannot stress the importance of having a good muscle quiz guide. Because you have so many technical latin names to remember, it would be nearly impossible to learn them by reading over and over again. You need to test your knowledge. Becoming proficient at muscles doesn’t have to be difficult, just follow the steps above and use your muscle quiz guide, you will soon gain the confidence you need to pass your exams.
